New Survey Highlights Trends Within the HR Career

Author: Heather Nezich

Namely, the leading HR platform for mid-sized companies, has published its annual HR Careers Report, which offers insights into the human resource profession around demographics, diversity, pay, and more. Human Resources Career text blocks

Some insights uncovered by the HR Career Report include:

  • 71% of HR professionals are female. This overwhelming majority may be on the rise. When Namely's 2018 Workplace Diversity Report was published in June 2018, women represented 67% of HR.
  • While HR teams of 1-4 employees have an average tenure of 3.24 years, teams with 40+ HR people average just over a year with their company. As HR teams scale, retention becomes a growing problem.
  • 65% of HR professionals identify as white, with the next highest representations at 12% Asian and 10% Hispanic.
  • Pay Equity seems to be an issue in HR, too. While female HR practitioners earned $91,981 a year on average, their male counterparts earned almost 13% more, or $103,644.
  • The average age of an HR professional is 35.
  • The top ten HR titles include:

o   Recruiting Coordinator

o   HR Manager

o   HR Generalist

o   HR Coordinator

o   Director, HR

o   Recruiting Manager

o   HR Specialist

o   HR Assistant

o   VP, HR

o   HR Director

Interestingly, the title of “Director, HR” tends to make more than an “HR Director.” This is likely due to the fact that a “Director, HR” will likely have a chain of direct reports, but an “HR Director” may sit on a smaller team with fewer direct reports.

  • The average team size varies greatly by company size

Once companies grow beyond 50 employees, HR tends to add an additional HR staff member for every 50 employees.  But once an organization reaches 300-500 employees, the HR staff doubles.
