In the category of what’s good for the goose is good for the gander we have the pro-union National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) recently finding the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union engaged in a myriad of unfair labor practices with its own unionized staff who are members of FAIR. (Yes, unions have unions.)

Expect health care premiums to increase next year thanks to prescription drugs: Nonprofit research company 46 Brooklyn found that pharmaceutical companies are raising prices for over 700 medications in January alone, with the average increase sitting at about 4.5%. Popular weight-loss drug Ozempic, for example, will see a price hike of 3.5%, while the antidepressant Wellbutrin will increase by 9.9%.

Return to office efforts are starting to wane. Just 6 out of 158 CEOs in the United States have indicated their intent to prioritize the return of employees to full-time office work in 2024, according to a recent survey conducted by The Conference Board.
HR Managers face a wide range of complicated compliance and legal processes. Form I-9 and verifying an employee’s right to work as well as keeping all of this on file is among them. It is hard to know how to prevent an I-9 violation and what to expect if you are audited. Below is an outline of the audit process followed by some best practices for conducting an internal audit that you may find helpful.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported union membership continued to decline in 2023. The BLS reported that private sector union membership increased by 191,000 members during the year. Union representation was 11.2% of workers in 2023 down from 11.3% in 2022.
Some organizations are changing from a 401k plan to RBA. IBM is one such organization that is changing its traditional 401K plan to a new approach. IBM currently matches the first 5% of salary that employees contribute to their 401(k) accounts, dollar for dollar, and provides an automatic 1% contribution for a total of 6%. Instead, it will offer a secondary plan.

While it seems like elections and politics have been on-going rather than every two or four years, we are now entering the actual election year, and employers should prepare themselves to address possible employee dissent, rancor, or worse.
