What Employees Want from L&D in 2024

TalentLMS, in collaboration with Vyond, a leading AI-powered video creation platform, released a research report on the 2024 learning and development trends within organizations. 41% of employees said they will look for another job in 2024 if their company doesn’t provide them with training opportunities.

The survey was conducted among 1,000 employees across industries in the U.S., revealing the pivotal role training plays in retaining a skilled and motivated workforce.

Given the importance of training for employee engagement and satisfaction, the survey explored the types of training and skills that will be important for organizations to provide in 2024. Eight in ten employees think personalized learning will be important in 2024, and 68% stated the same for non-work-related training that supports their overall well-being.

“There is a growing need among employees for training on topics and skills that transcend their job roles,” said Thanos Papangelis, Co-founder of TalentLMS. “Personal and professional growth are not separate roads to success. Companies should invest in nurturing well-rounded professionals, acknowledging continuous learning beyond job specifics is essential in the ever-changing business landscape.”

The TalentLMS-Vyond survey revealed the top three non-mandatory training topics employees want to get training on. They are:

  • Leadership and management
  • Mental health
  • AI tools

Underscoring the importance of training in career development:

  • 72% of respondents said they have progressed in their careers thanks to the training they’ve received from their companies in 2023.
  • 71% report feeling more prepared for the future of work because of the training they’ve been provided.
  • Two in three employees (66%) think they need to develop new skills to be successful at their job.

“People-first companies know that skills development is essential to both the business and the employee,” said Van Diamandakis, Chief Commercial Officer at Vyond. “Getting it right for today’s workforce requires addressing the challenges of workplace learning, including cost effective, relevant and engaging learning delivered at the moment of need and at scale, surfaced in our findings.”

The five key trends identified for 2024 include:

  1. Personalized Learning – Cookie-cutter training doesn't cut it anymore. Employees are loud and clear when it comes to a one-size-fits-all training approach. They don't want it. Instead, they want training tailored to their individual needs and goals: 80% of employees surveyed think personalized learning will be important in 2024.
  2. Learn better, work better, live better – Workplace training will increasingly integrate well-being with skill-building: 68% of employees think non-work-related training that supports their overall well-being will be important in 2024. From mental health and mindfulness to financial wellness, career management, and further, L&D is taking a more holistic approach to employee development. Fusing personal development with workplace learning will not only support employees to work better but also live better.
  3. AI in Training – The widespread rollout of Al features, platforms, and tools will impact multiple domains of training such as learning metrics, personalization, content development and curation, assessments, feedback, and more. Employees are highly motivated to explore Al. In the forthcoming year, Al will unlock new opportunities in measuring and bridging skill gaps and driving innovation.
  4. Learning with a Purpose – Training alone doesn't guarantee effectiveness. Metrics and analytics are central in assessing the impact of L&D efforts on achieving business objectives. With Al unlocking new levels of reporting and metrics, data-driven training will anchor L&D more deeply in organizational goals. It will enable laser-focused addressing of business needs through training. In short, it will not be just about learning anymore; it'll be about learning with purpose.
  5. Bringing Back the Human Touch – On the heels of WFH, hybrid work, and a lack of socialization during the pandemic, people learned to keep more to themselves. After falling into the rhythm of social distancing, many still struggle to readjust to the return of social interactions. On top of that, workplaces have become more tech-driven and digital, with a shortfall of human touch and a decline in face-to-face interaction. This soft skills gap will likely come more into focus in 2024, highlighting the need to bring back the human touch in learning environments.
