Embracing the AI Era

Artificial intelligence isn’t just the next technological wave; it’s a transformation that will touch every role, every industry, and every employee. As Walmart CEO Doug McMillon recently said, “Maybe there’s a job in the world that AI won’t change, but I haven’t thought of it.” That statement captures the moment we’re all in. AI is no longer theoretical. It’s here, and it’s reshaping how work gets done.

Some organizations, like Walmart, are already acting with urgency. They’re identifying which roles are changing, which will disappear, and where new opportunities will emerge. Their approach is not about replacing people. It is about preparing them. They understand that success in the AI era depends on how well companies can retrain and reposition their workforce.

AI is not coming for workers; it is coming with them. While AI may not replace your job, someone who knows how to use and embrace it might. Employers are exploring how human skills, such as empathy, judgment, and collaboration, work alongside AI-driven tools and increasingly value employees who can leverage AI to create efficiencies and drive results.

At ASE, we’re seeing more organizations recognize the importance of AI literacy. HR professionals, in particular, have a key role to play. As job requirements evolve, HR must lead reskilling initiatives, assess new competencies, and ensure employees are not just surviving this transition but thriving in it. That means creating learning cultures where curiosity is rewarded and adaptability is seen as a strength.

Employees, too, have a responsibility in this new era. The days of doing the same job the same way for decades are gone. Every worker, regardless of role or tenure, should be asking, “How can I use AI to make my work more effective? What skills will help me stay relevant?” Those who take ownership of their growth will find new opportunities emerging in areas like data interpretation, AI tool management, and relationship-driven roles that machines cannot replicate.

The future of work will be defined by how well people and organizations use AI together. ASE offers a micro-certification to help employers and employees build a deeper understanding of AI and how to apply it in the workplace. We are also hosting a complimentary HR Smart Session in Grand Rapids at our member ADAC on November 19th, titled AI in HR: Recruitment, Engagement, and Cultural Impact.
