Here are five strategies to improve engagement via communication.

Trust within the workplace thrives when leadership spearheads transparent communication. Research from a 2022 People Element survey underscored the significant need for improved communication from senior leadership, revealing deficiencies in various areas. These included insufficient communication (44%), lack of a clear vision (40%), and a sense that leadership undervalues employees (39%).

To build a more connected organization, it's critical to enhance leadership visibility and approachability. Ensure management communicates regularly and purposefully, initiating two-way conversations. Adopt strategies such as having leaders personally sign off on important messages and incorporating photos of leadership in their communication signatures to humanize interactions.

  1. Encourage Two-Way Communication and Active Listening

Establishing open and honest two-way communication requires proactive efforts. Create diverse communication channels to gather feedback from employees, transcending the scope of an annual survey. Fostering multidirectional dialogue allows for unstructured feedback, revealing insights into employees' thoughts and concerns.

Actively listen to employees' voices and integrate their feedback into company messages, strategies, and values. Emphasize the importance of providing space for open dialogue, ensuring that employees receive confirmation of their communications, fostering a culture of trust and inclusion.

Streamline communication tools by centralizing them for easier accessibility. Implement user-friendly employee apps, offering a unified platform for all job-related communications and applications. Such tools provide a consistent and straightforward user experience across different devices, catering to both desk workers and frontline/remote employees.

Centralized communication platforms ease the complexity of accessing information, thereby saving employees time and effort, ultimately enhancing their engagement and loyalty.

  1. Cultivate Community Through Recognition, Support, and Inclusion

Effective internal communication plays a pivotal role in building a sense of community. Utilize recognition to celebrate accomplishments and demonstrate empathy towards the challenges employees face, fostering engagement and appreciation. Support the mental well-being of employees, especially frontline workers who may feel disconnected from the central office.
