Why Postpartum Benefits Matter More Than Ever

Postpartum recovery is a deeply personal journey, but support can make a big difference. Care and resources following childbirth improve a mother's long-term outcomes. These outcomes are better on a physical, emotional, as well as professional level. Yet within the United States, far too many women navigate this complex transition largely on their own.

The weeks following childbirth are a critical time. Mothers are healing physically, adjusting emotionally, and learning how to care for a newborn. Medical follow-ups, mental health support, and practical guidance on sleep, feeding, and recovery are all essential. But access to this kind of support is often inconsistent, and in some cases, nonexistent. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, up to 40% of women skip their postpartum checkup- a clear indicator of the gap in care.

In a survey by postpartum care provider Boram Care, 79% of mothers said they underestimated the importance of postpartum recovery before experiencing it. Sleep deprivation, mental health struggles, and lack of physical recovery support were common challenges. These challenges impact family stability and the ability to return to work in a healthy, sustainable way.

That’s where employers come in.

Companies that invest in postpartum benefits are not just doing the right thing for their employees; they’re making a smart business decision. Only 37% of companies with 500 or more employees currently offer at least one maternal health benefit, according to USofCare.org. Yet research from Carrot Fertility found that 45% of mothers considered leaving their jobs after their most recent pregnancy. That number climbs above 60% for Gen Z moms.

When mothers feel unsupported, they leave. When they feel cared for, they stay.

Boram Care, founded by Boram Nam after her own difficult postpartum experiences, is working to change the standard of care in the U.S. Her model draws inspiration from South Korea’s postpartum retreat facilities, where mothers receive hands-on, wraparound care. Boram offers in-home services focused on both newborn and maternal wellness, and helps families navigate insurance reimbursement or employer coverage options.

Nam emphasizes that postpartum benefits aren’t just about services, they’re about mindset. When employers actively educate expectant parents on available resources and encourage them to prioritize their recovery, it signals trust and respect. It also supports a smoother return-to-work experience, benefiting both the employee and company.

Holistic support must include partners and fathers, too. Offering family-focused benefits reflects a modern, inclusive approach that younger workers increasingly expect.

Postpartum benefits present a valuable opportunity for employers to show support by educating employees on available policies and resources. Investing in this stage of life pays off in loyalty, productivity, and long-term wellbeing.
