Get Into It! Learning Technology

I have a confession. I’m a “Techie” (Not a Trekie for your Star Trek fans!). I love all kinds of technology!  I was just entering college when the internet took the world by storm in the late 90’s.  I’ve always understood technology to be a way to make our lives easier. In recent years, technology has revolutionized the field of education. With the introduction of instructional technology, trainers are now able to engage learners like never before.

Instructional technology refers to the use of technology to improve teaching and learning. The top five instructional technology items that are transforming the way we teach include:

  1. Learning Management Systems (LMS)Learning Management Systems (LMS) are online platforms that allow trainers to create, manage, and deliver educational content to learners. LMSs provide a centralized location for trainers to post assignments, quizzes, and videos, as well as to track learner progress and performance. Some popular LMSs include Blackboard, Canvas, and Moodle. Refer to The Fab Four Elements to Look for in an LMS article on what to look out for when choosing an LMS.
  2. Interactive Whiteboards
Interactive whiteboards are large touch-sensitive screens that can be used to display and manipulate images, videos, and other types of media. They allow trainers to create interactive lessons that engage learners and promote active learning. Interactive whiteboards are also useful for collaboration, as multiple learners can work together on the same board at the same time.  It can be costly but will turn your learning into an event rather than a chore. Review the top eight recommend white boards here.
  3. Virtual Reality (VR)
Virtual Reality (VR) is a technology that creates a simulated environment that users can interact with. VR can be used in education to create immersive learning experiences that allow learners to explore different environments and scenarios. For example, learners can use VR to travel to different countries or to experience historical events. VR can be used with headsets or on a computer screen. You have seen this through the popular video systems like Meta quest.  However, this technology can be used right on a smart phone for a less expensive option while maintaining the impact.  This is useful for fields like healthcare and manufacturing where the proper use of equipment is paramount to the job.
  4. Educational Apps
Educational apps are software applications that are designed to help learners learn. Educational apps can be used on smartphones, tablets, and computers. There are educational apps available for a wide range of subjects, from math and science to language learning and coding. Educational apps can be used both inside and outside the classroom, making them a versatile tool for learning. Used mostly in corporate training, feedback apps are used for engagement such as Kahoot! and Slido.

Instructional technology has transformed the way we teach and learn. From Learning Management Systems to Virtual Reality, these top five instructional technology items are revolutionizing the way we engage and inspire our learners. As technology continues to evolve, we can expect to see even more innovative ways to transform education.
