A Fun Exercise with Chat GPT to Identify Your Leadership Styles

It’s become apparent that AI is here to stay, so we might as well embrace it. Although, ASE recently surveyed Michigan employers and it revealed that that only a quarter of Michigan employers are currently using or planning to implement AI in HR, with significant concerns about reliability, data privacy, and bias.

The use of AI is still in the beginning stages for its uses around the employee lifecycle, but it is no doubt on the rise. I recently came across an article on Forbes.com that offers a fun, unique way leaders can utilize Chat GPT to analyze their own leadership styles. The article suggests copying and pasting the prompts into ChatGPT while keeping the same chat window open so the context carries through.

The prompts suggested are:

Communication Style – “Create a 10-question quiz to understand my leadership style in relation to communication. Ask multiple choice questions, that you deliver one at a time, to establish my preferred approach. When I have answered all 10, provide an analysis. Use this analysis to make 3 suggestions on how I should communicate with my team, and 3 pitfalls to avoid, that will play to my unique strengths and inspire my team. I’m not looking for generic leadership advice, I want specific information tailored to me, based on the quiz.”

Decision Making Style – “Create a 10-question quiz to uncover my decision-making style under pressure. The test should consist of multiple-choice questions, which you deliver one at a time, to determine my approach with regards to making quick decisions or preferring detailed consideration. After I answer all 10 questions, provide an analysis. Use this analysis to suggest 3 dos and 3 don’ts for making decisions that not only resolve immediate issues but also propel my team forward. Give insights that are directly tied to my responses. Avoid general guidance in favor of actionable, personalized strategies.”

Conflict Resolution Style – “Make a 10-question quiz to figure out my style for resolving conflicts. The questions should be multiple choice, delivered one at a time, to find out my style when it comes to both talking things out and taking action. After I answer all 10, give me an analysis. From this, tell me 3 dos and 3 don'ts for handling team conflicts. These tips should be specific to my style, helping me deal with problems smoothly and keep my team working well together."

Motivation Leadership Style – “Create a 10-question quiz to discover my motivational leadership style. The questions should be multiple choice, delivered one at a time, to find out if I tend to lead by setting an example, by giving encouragement, or something else. After I finish all 10 questions, analyze my answers. Use this analysis to suggest 3 dos and 3 don'ts for motivating my team that are specific to how I lead. I want advice that really works for me, not just general tips."

Resilience Leadership Style – “Create a 10-question quiz to learn about my resilience leadership style. Make the questions multiple choice, delivered one at a time, to see if I support my team by being positive, by planning ahead, or incorporate other elements of resilience in leadership. After I answer all 10 questions, give me an analysis. Use this to suggest 3 dos and 3 don'ts for helping my team overcome difficulties. These tips should be specific to my style, helping me guide my team through challenges effectively."

I encourage you to give this a try.  I played around with it and was impressed with the detailed analysis it gave me for my communication style:

Feedback Approach: Your preference for providing detailed and specific feedback (Option A) indicates that you value clarity and precision in communication. This suggests that you likely prioritize constructive criticism and appreciate clear, actionable feedback.

Meeting Style: Opting for a mix of structure and flexibility in team meetings (Option C) suggests that you recognize the importance of balance. You likely value having an agenda to maintain focus while also allowing space for open discussion and idea generation.

Problem Resolution: Preferring to listen empathetically and provide support when team members come to you with problems (Option B) indicates your inclination towards fostering a supportive and understanding environment. This approach likely encourages trust and open communication within your team.

Communication of Goals: Your choice of using a mix of written and verbal formats to communicate goals and expectations (Option C) suggests that you recognize the importance of catering to different communication preferences within your team. This approach can enhance clarity and understanding.

Conflict Management: Opting to allow the team to resolve conflicts themselves unless they escalate (Option C) indicates your trust in your team's ability to handle interpersonal issues. This approach fosters autonomy and encourages team members to take ownership of resolving conflicts.

Motivation Strategy: Preferring to offer personal development and growth opportunities to keep your team motivated (Option C) suggests that you value investing in your team members' professional growth. This approach can foster a sense of fulfillment and engagement among team members.

Delegation Style: Choosing to trust your team to handle tasks with minimal supervision (Option B) indicates your confidence in your team's abilities. This approach promotes empowerment and autonomy among team members, fostering a sense of ownership and accountability.

Celebrating Success: Preferring to share the success in a team meeting and discuss future goals (Option D) suggests that you value reflection and continuous improvement. This approach keeps the team focused on long-term objectives and maintains momentum after achieving success.

Introducing Changes: Opting to encourage open discussion and feedback when introducing new ideas or changes (Option B) indicates your belief in the importance of collaboration and inclusivity. This approach fosters innovation and ensures that changes are well-received by the team.

Communication During Uncertainty: Choosing to provide regular updates and reassurance during times of uncertainty or crisis (Option A) indicates your commitment to transparency and maintaining morale. This approach helps to alleviate anxiety and keeps the team informed and engaged.

It then proceeded to give me areas of strengths and potential pitfalls to avoid. I found it to be a good exercise that could potentially be used for leadership development purposes and self-improvement.  Let me know if you try it.  Email me at [email protected].
