Remote Work Policy Best Practices for Employers

When developing work-from-home (WFH) policies, it's important to consider several key elements to ensure they are effective and supportive of both organizational and employee needs. Here are some aspects to consider:

1. Purpose and Scope: Clearly define the purpose of the WFH policy and the scope of its application. Specify which employees are eligible and any exceptions to the policy.

2. Eligibility and Role Suitability: Assess which roles are suitable for WFH by considering factors such as the degree to which the role is enabled by portable technology, the level of independence required, and the ability to manage work outcomes remotely.

3. Technology and Access: Establish standards for remote access to ensure employees can securely connect to internal networks. This includes defining supported technologies, eligible users, and appropriate use of company resources.

4. Flexibility and Core Hours: Outline expectations regarding core working hours and flexibility. This can include guidelines on availability, communication protocols, and how to handle time zone differences if applicable.

5. Reimbursements and Resources: Consider whether the organization will provide reimbursements for home office expenses or equipment. Clearly communicate what resources or support the company will provide to facilitate effective remote work.

6. Performance Management: Implement strategies for managing performance in a remote setting. This includes setting clear expectations, regular check-ins, and using performance metrics that are suitable for remote work environments.

7. Communication and Collaboration: Emphasize the importance of maintaining effective communication and collaboration among remote teams. Provide guidelines on the use of collaboration tools and platforms to ensure seamless interaction.

8. Health and Safety: Ensure that the WFH policy addresses health and safety considerations, such as ergonomic setups and mental well-being support.
