How to Show Your Employees They Are Appreciated

Employee Appreciation Day is coming up on March 6, 2020. It’s important to show employees that they are valued throughout the year, and a recent article I found on Inc.com shares some simple ways for managers to show appreciation consistently throughout each workweek.

1.       Make on-the-clock time for off-the-clock chat.  Managers should make it a regular habit to check in with their employees throughout the week, not just professionally, but also on a personal level. As more employees are becoming remote, it’s important to also do this with them as well. It avoids feelings of isolation.  Employees will feel valued if they know you care about them as more than just a seat filler.

2.       Send e-blasts.  Send company-wide emails congratulating employees on jobs well done.  Publicly acknowledging employees can go a long way in helping employees to feel appreciated.  When an email is sent, often times coworkers will chime in as well, which will help employees to also feel valued by their colleagues.  At ASE, I make it a point to share compliments and achievements at our monthly all-staff meetings.

3.       Practice workplace wellness. One of the best ways to show employees they are appreciated is to ensure they have the tools they need to succeed in the workplace. Part of that includes supporting mental wellness. Ideas include yoga once a week or 15-minute meditation breaks. Perhaps encourage your employees to take a short 10- to 15-minute walk outside when weather allows.

4.       Celebrate workplace anniversaries. Celebrating a workplace milestone is a great way to show an employee you are happy they are there and that you recognize the work they have done over time. Again, ASE does this in our monthly meetings.

5.       Listen to your employees. It’s important to listen to your employees and find out how they like to be rewarded. Employee surveys are a great way to find this out.  Ask questions to see what they’d like to see in the office – water machines, better coffee, etc. Are their restaurants or stores around town they like?  This is where managers getting to know their employees can be helpful. If an employee goes above and beyond, they can then be rewarded with something that they particularly like.

It doesn’t require extravagant perks to show employees they are appreciated.  Something as little as a personal thank you note can make an employee’s day.  Appreciation should come from the top and be encouraged throughout management and even employees.  Sometimes a coworker saying thank you to another coworker can be just as effective as if it came from leadership.  Encourage a workplace of appreciation.  Your employees will appreciate it.
