Develop a Learning Management System Strategy

For the modern organization, corporate learning programs have gone from a nice-to-have to a must-have. In McLean & Company’s 2016 Trends & Priorities Survey of ASE members, Leadership/Management Development and Employee Development were identified as the two highest priority areas for HR in 2016. Learning Management Systems (LMS) are no longer just replacing the manual tracking of training, but are a key element of engaging employees in learning.

Organizations with departmentalized and siloed learning management systems have little visibility into the breadth and effectiveness of their training programs. Administering, tracking, and reporting training are often conducted manually, creating a cumbersome process for HR.

In most cases, organizations treat their learning management systems as just another point solution in their HR landscape and fail to integrate learning into the talent lifecycle.

Leading organizations are right-sizing their LMS solutions. You can avoid under-investing or overbuying from the start. LMSs come in all shapes and sizes and you can stay away from functions you don’t need. Identifying your LMS use case from the start will focus your strategy and filter your needs. A disjointed and departmentalized approach to learning will inevitably fail.

Use this blueprint to create a common understanding of LMS between HR, IT, and business stakeholders, and offer guidance on how to translate learning and development needs into LMS technology requirements. Use the tools and methodology to take a unified approach to learning by considering people, process, technology, and content.
