Does Your Organization Need an LMS?

Chances are that if you have been automating your HR business processes you have likely come across Learning Management Systems (LMSs) and wondered if you should consider one. An LMS is a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting and delivery of training content. The LMS industry is now more than a billion dollars in size, with hundreds of products to pick from. How do you decide which one is the right one for you?

Who Makes a Better Leader, a Man or a Woman?

Ask that question of the average person. You may get the response that women make better leaders because women are more naturally empathetic and nurturing while men are all about strength and drive for results. Or you may get the response that men are better leaders, for exactly the same reasons. How real are these perceptions?

What is a College Degree Worth in Tough Economic Times?

It has long been believed that getting a college degree makes a big salary difference in the life of the person who gets it. Data suggests that someone who earns a college degree is likely to earn more over the course of a career than someone does not get a degree. But what about today’s economic climate? or during the Great Recession? Does a degree still make a difference when unemployment rates are high? Does it still pay for itself? Does it provide better job security?

Study Identifies Emerging Direction for Employee Coaching

Lee Hecht Harrison, a national recruiting firm, recently published results of a study it commissioned on employee coaching. Coaching is a broadening field of employee development. We can define it as a professional engaging one-one-one with a key employee to further develop the latter’s leadership and management skills, or help overcome a weakness that is holding him or her back.

What do you do during a recession? Traditional wisdom says, stay in school. Get an advanced degree while the job market is weak, and be ready for a more knowledge-driven economy as the job market begins to recover. Like any long ride, you will eventually hear that inevitable and sometimes annoying question, “Are we there yet?” Unfortunately for a lot of MBA grads the answer is still “not yet,” even though the destination may not be too far off.

Special Focus: Education Costs Driving the Decline of the American Workforce

The skill base of the American workforce has been declining, with many employers unable to fill highly technical jobs. One major cause of this meltdown is the cost of post-high school education. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 34 million Americans over 25 years old have some college credits but haven't received a diploma. That number has grown by roughly 700,000 people over the past three years. According to a 2010 report by Georgetown University, 63% of jobs offered by 2018 will require postsecondary education.
